Mental health issues and the opioid crisis are topics of not only local, but national concern. They impact millions of people of all ages. They do not discriminate. They are serious issues that need to be addressed rather than ignored. In my first term, I passed a number of bills that deal with both issues.
I sponsored Mental Health Legislation (HB 1183) which protects our children and improves public safety in our schools. From 2015 to 2016, more than 30,000 minors were Baker Acted, many directly from school. HB 1183 improves situations for minors by putting in place protections that allow children to quickly receive services in order to return home to their families. It also created a task force to investigate the use of the Baker Act within our education system.
I also cosponsored HB 557, which directly addresses the opioid crisis by requiring more transparency and accountability from pharmacies and doctors who prescribe opioid medication, to prevent pharmacy shopping.
I am honored to have the endorsement of the Florida Medical Association and I will do everything in my power to continue to address additional matters of mental health and work to defeat the opioid crisis, which has impacted too many people in our State.
